  • Rituals & Practices Double EP
    Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

Magpahi weaves together a rich tapestry encompassing six different forms of ritual from the West Country, largely informaed by the work of late folklorist Theo Brown. Alison presents a sonic vitrine of tales and customs. Among them are the salting down of a corpse at an isloated Dartmoor inn; the plaiting of corn dollies in the field, tied from standing sheaves; the dangers of picking the white flower flowers of stitchwort (which may result in being spirit-led away by malignant pixie folk); and the work of witches and charmers in Devon, including their use of snakeskin for cures.

Rituals and Practices was originally released on cassette in Autumn, 2012 and features a grimoire of sonic spells exploring symbolic customs and activities from the county of Devon. The original recordings have been remastered from tape for this fourth archival reissue. The original release was a split between Magpahi and Paper Dollhouse.

about

The salting of corpses was the regular procedure in isloated places. In the terrible winter of 1946-47 the earth was frozen like concrete and could not be got at until snow ploughs came from Princetown. The New Inn was one of the highest inns in England and the keeper of the establishment died there one winter.

Eventually the snow melted, and the little daughter struggled to Widecombe to ask the vicar to arrange the funeral. "Which day did he die?" asled the vicar. "Oh dear," said the little girl thinking hard, "it must be six weeks last Sunday." "Good heavens!" exclaimed tbe cleric, "how appalling. We must get on with the funeral." "Oh, I don't think there's any need for haste," replied the child calmly. "It happened very lucky like. We'd just killed the pig and he was saltin' 'un down, so mother put father in too."
